Decluttering and Finding Joy in your possessions is a popular topic right now. I’ve been on this journey almost two years and have found it beneficial in so many ways to start getting rid of the clutter. It’s not an easy task and can often be overwhelming. I hope this beginner’s guide can help you get started on your very own journey!

The Beginner’s Guide to Decluttering Your Home

First I want to ask you, why are you here? The importance of Decluttering your home is a little different for everyone and your reasons may be different from someone else’s. However, we all share the same need to find order and organization.

Our Declutter Mission:

To create a peaceful and calm environment by taking control of what we have in our homes. We want to rid ourselves of unnecessary and unwanted items so we have room to breathe and create a space full of love and appreciation.

After I had my daughter I was so fortunate to be able to stay home with her for 9 months. While there were so many benefits, I found myself anxious and frustrated with the state of my home. Everyday, I looked around my home figuring out how I could even clean with so much stuff in my way. It was draining. Every time I walked by another space, I felt more and more dread. It was an added stress that I really didn’t need at the time, and to be honest, no one ever really needs that added stress!

Finally, I decided to take things into my own hands and take control of my environment. I read a lot of books and researched online, but I felt that none of the popular “methods” were practical for a busy new mom who was just trying to survive.

That’s why I am here writing these posts. I want to help you, with limited time, to start taking control of YOUR environment in small practical steps, so you can feel happy every time you walk through your home :)


What does it mean to Declutter?

According to google, Declutter means: “remove unnecessary items from (an untidy or overcrowded place).”

It’s important that you think about what that looks like in your own home based on the needs of your life. I personally am about to have a second child and possibly eventually a third (probably not but maybe), so I’m going to store away baby clothes for a few years, just in case. But if you know that you’re not having any more children, It’s probably time to donate those clothes to someone who needs them. I have more toys than necessary (working on that) but as long as I have a tidy and organized storage solution, I’ll probably hold on to more than plenty of them.

A common misconception is that we are all striving to be minimalists and live out of a backpack. That can be true for many people, but for me, it is important to declutter and organize spaces so they WORK FOR ME. My home, space, layout, and life is different than yours, so as you read through this, It’s important that you create guidelines that work specifically for you!

I believe that there is a perfect amount of stuff for each of us. An amount that allows us to feel free and calm but an amount that does not add extra stress. We don’t want to stress about what we plan to wear to work in the morning after not doing our own laundry for a two weeks.

How to get Started in your Decluttering Journey

The fact that you are here reading this, is a great step 1. The good news is that you do not necessarily NEED to buy anything to get started but a few things will help you:

  • Bags - Black Garbage bags or Paper Lawn Bags for donations (hello environment!)

  • Bins (Just remember, we're trying to get rid of stuff, but organizing your storage is important too!)

  • Music (it’s more fun to declutter when you’re having fun…trust me!)

After that, you just have to start.

Tips For Success

  • Set Goals

    I suggest that you start small. Is there one major space you know needs work? Do you just need to get your kitchen under control and then thing will start to feel better? How much time will you spend each day working on this project? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? When do you want to have this all done and accomplished?

  • Make a Plan

    Make a list of exactly what areas you want to declutter. Bedroom, bathroom, hall closet, etc.

  • Build a Support Network

    It’s really hard to organize a home (and keep it organized) if you’re on your own but live with other people. Talk with them and get their support. It’s MUCH easier if you’re working together towards a common goal.

  • Be Realistic

    You’re not going to clean up your whole house in one day. If you’re busy like me, I can spend maybe 15-20 minutes a day (longer on the weekend) to work towards my goals. What does that look like to you?

  • Know yourself


    Be honest with yourself and know what you will or will not accomplish. Try and think about how this journey will make you feel and what you need in order to accomplish your goals.

Common Questions

I feel very overwhelmed with the whole process, what exactly do I start with?

Make a list of exactly what spaces need your attention. Nothing is too small! Is it your bathroom cabinet, kitchen table, or the entire guest room because that’s where you throw everything to die?

In the end, you just have to make the choice to start. Decide on a space today and set a timer for 20 minutes…then get it done :)

Where can I donate my items?

This is a big one and it varies from place to place. Check online for local donation centers, churches, shelters, or friends/family.

You can also try to sell items online!

I got a few spaces organized, how to I keep them that way?

First, great job! It takes a mindset shift to make organization a priority. Every time you put your towels away, make sure you are keeping the closet organized. Don’t go to bed if there is crap all over your counter. Check out these Top 5 Tips to keep your home organized.


The Last thing you need to Know about Delcuttering your Home

You are capable and able to tackle your clutter. Hopefully with the tools I’d laid out, you feel more confident in starting this journey! It’s an ongoing journey for us all, so don’t get discouraged if it seems like it takes forever. It took me a long time too! But once I cleaned up all the spaces, maintenance mode is much easier, i promise :)
